With ongoing supply chain disruptions and political instability, an increasing number of companies are shifting production back to domestic soil. Seeking greater stability in parts manufactured, and as a previous customer, GripWorks was chosen as an alternative to the foreign supplier. 2-shot injection molding was aligned for this project and became a key to success!

Design and Function
While GripWorks has supplied hose guards over the years for the Teknor Apex Outdoor Garden Hose line, in recent years the designs and functions are becoming increasingly dynamic. Conversations and market awareness served up compelling reasons for GripWorks to expand their capabilities. Once GripWorks was set up to manufacture parts using 2-shot injection molding, it was time to begin production!
The challenge included replicating an existing bend restrictor, but it required two functions for a garden hose application. First, stiffness at the hose ends restricts the hose from pinching or kinking and maintains a steady water flow preventing permanent damage. Second, the gripping portion of the bend restrictor is softer to the touch, yet still firm on the inside. This makes connection and removal much easier for the user.

Molded to Fit Automated Assembly
Although this was assigned as a replication, GripWorks participation in design was a key factor. Critical during production of the hose included the assembly process. To facilitate this, the molded cavity on the end of the restrictor is shaped to match the ferrules on the hose fittings. With the tapered design the ferrules snap securely into place when press-fit by the machine during automated assembly. This creates exceptional grip strength and leverage when tightening or loosening the hose from a spigot.
Two Materials, One Unit
The capability of the 2-shot injection molding process allows two materials to be used to produce a single unit. The strength of the part lies not just in the material durability, but also in the merging of the two materials. GripWorks not only succeeded in meeting the goal, but our design team also developed an improved, more stable design to enhance the bonding between the two materials. Not only does the updated configuration increase overall durability, it also ensures a more consistent and secure interface between components.
The 2-shot injection molding process offers additional capabilities, allowing not only the use of two different materials but also the incorporation of different colors.
